STREET SMARTS #12

Most of us don’t like to even think about being involved in an accident on the road. But a simple fact of life is that they do happen. So here’s what to do if you’re ever involved in a fender-bender of your own.

Firstly, stay calm and ensure everyone in the vehicle or vehicles is OK. Decide if you need to call an ambulance or the police, and don’t move your car unless it’s absolutely necessary. Get plenty of photos of the scene and capture all the damage to cars and other property. Swap all the relevant information with the other parties.

Then, decide if you need to call a tow truck. If you don’t, you’ll still need to report the accident at your nearest reporting centre within 24 hours. Finally, when the time comes to fix your car, ensure you get the work done at an authorised workshop.

Most of all, don’t panic. These things happen, and there’s a due process for sorting everything out.
